"Survival Game" was filmed in "Jianguo 9th Village" in Taoyuan. The place was originally an Air Force military kindred village but now it's just a ghost town. Later, survival game players began showing up at this abandoned village, making it a popular spot for the games. Survival games (a simulation of war) and a military kindred village (a haven safe from war) form a rather intricate relationship. At the same time, Taoyuan has also been facing problems regarding urban development. As of now, Taoyuan is far from becoming what its government imagined it would have developed into decades ago, Taoyuan aerotropolis. As development continues to progress at a slow pace, the Taoyuan government has decided to expand its compulsory acquisition of land, and many of its residents are now facing migratory problems on top of an aging population. The areas have ironically turned into ghost towns spoken amongst the locals. The perspective of "Survival Game" puts an emphasis on "survival" as its core for storytelling, which connects the past and the present, as well as survival game players, the former military kindreds, and the now-migrating residents. The assembly of three groups of people from different backgrounds tells a story that traverses across time. Everyone is all attending a survival game of their own.
There was a variety
of game elements that was incorporated into the visuals. These elements stretch
across the following shots of players in action, the dialogues between
residents, and air combat scenes. We attempted to fuse factual documentary with
virtual elements, couple that with the dialogue from the locals, interviews
with survival game players, and a well-crafted narrative, we were able to
connect the local scenery shots with the past glory of the air forces heroes.
Lastly, with the air forces war song in the background, and scenes of survival
game players traversing across in Jianguo 9th Village, a connection is made
between the past and the present. The war song reflects the past locals'
identity and history, but the scenes portray only ruins of what has been left
behind. We portrayed our shots in a non-linear editing style with multiple
monitors running simultaneously as they run through the ruins and the
countryside, documenting a short moment in time and observing this land from a
sideline perspective.
