The rise and fall of
Fuzhou is a microcosm of the societal changes happening in Taiwan. By viewing
Fuzhou from a different angle, through the local's memories, we can explore the
history of Fuzhou, piece together the past day-to-day sceneries with a
historical context. Therefore, understand the helplessness the people felt
towards their livelihood in Fuzhou, and how they began distancing themselves
from their home. Fuzhou was a sandbar that suffered from flooding; it was not
until the flooding was resolved and became habitable that people began noticing
this place. Fuzhou became the home to many; however, much of it was destroyed
in a typhoon. Many people lost their homes, some people decided to leave
Fuzhou, and some decided to stay and rebuild, but as land development came
about, people gradually lost touch with the place. In this video, we portrayed
the memories of the local people as "wandering spirits" that walk across
Fuzhou, traversing between the fields and ruins; each of these spirits ties
back a memory to their people across various groups of ethnicities. Through the
words of the local people and the poetic visuals, we managed to bring this
place with an undertone of tragedy back to life and recall the memories that
have been forgotten.
